Ini novel John Grisham pertama yang saya baca. Saya tahu sih Grisham ini penulis yang banyak karyanya. Saya juga sering lihat buku-buku Grisham diobral di toko buku-toko buku sekarang. Mungkin karena kelihatannya ini novel bapuk dan enggak ada sesuatu yang menarik dan kekinian di novel ini, saya jadi enggak pernah merasa ingin baca karya-karya Grisham.

Ini punyanya Papa saya, tapi sudah saya anggap punya saya. Yang saya punya ini adalah versi Indonesia cetakan keempat tahun 2003. Tapi aslinya novel ini pertama kali terbit tahun 1999. Mungkin alasan lain kenapa saya enggak tertarik baca karya Grisham adalah karena saat novel-novelnya sedang di masa kejayaan, karena saya sok tahu saya perkirakan itu tahun 90-an sampai awal 2000, saat itu saya belum di fase yang senang membaca novel misteri dengan latar dunia orang dewasa.

Dari halaman pertama, saya sudah enggak bisa memalingkan mata! WEDAN KEREN BANGET! 

Ini novel thriller misteri yang pol banget bikin penasarannya. Novel setebal 617 halaman ini selesai saya baca kurang dari dua hari. Itu termasuk cepat buat saya yang kecepatan bacanya lelet banget, dan lagi selama dua hari itu pun saya sibuk ngurus sesuatu.

I often read books before I go to sleep every night, because that’s how I roll since I was a kid. If the books are not interesting enough to keep me awake, I don’t mind because those books still help me to beat my sleep deprivation. As you may guess, the amount of books that keep me awake through the night is, of course, far more many than the books that don’t. But, books that keep me awake AND haunt me in my sleep are quite rare, I believe. 

This book. This book is one of those books that makes me lost my sleep time, and when I did sleep, it haunted my ugly dream. I admit, I had a nightmare after I read this book. It jabbed me right in my supposedly brave-heart.

I enjoy this book so much. I can’t believe that NONE of my Goodreads friends have read it (or maybe they just don’t put it on their bookshelves, I don’t know).

Saya menerima buku ini melalui NetGalley, buku ini direncanakan akan terbit pada September 2014.

Pertama saya lihat buku ini di rak buku salah satu teman di Goodreads. Sampulnya keren, dan saya tertarik sekali setelah baca ringkasan bukunya. Katanya ini layaknya The Bourne Identity ketemu Divergent. Saya sih belum baca Divergent, tapi dinilai dari popularitasnya yang tinggi, kayaknya itu novel boleh juga. Dan tentu saja, saya penggemar berat The Bourne Identity, maka saya pun makin penasaran jadinya. Terus ternyata ini tentang perempuan yang semacam hilang ingatan begitu (selera saya banget, cuy). Kesimpulannya:

MAU MAU MAU! Kasiin ke gueee!

Dan saya coba minta ARC-nya (advance reader copy) ke NetGalley, walaupun penerbitnya bilang mereka cuma mengutamakan permintaan pembaca dari Amerika Serikat dan Kanada, saya tetap saja mengajukan permintaan ARC-nya, saya sudah kepingin banget! Dan saya pun dikasih ARC-nya. Reaksi saya:

I received this book via NetGalley, it is expected to be published in September 2014.

I first noticed about this book when I saw it in a shelf of a Goodreads fellow. The cover looks cool, and I became very interested when I read the blurb. It says, this book is The Bourne Identity meets Divergent. Well, I haven’t read Divergent yet, but judging from the hype so far, looks like it’s a pretty decent read. And of course, I was AND am a huge fan of The Bourne series, so I was instantly curious about this one. Further reading the blurb, this book is about a girl who lost her memories (my favorite kind of story!). In a nutshell:

So, I requested its ARC (advance reader copy) via NetGalley. Although the publisher notes that they are preferred members from US and Canada only, I couldn’t help but just tried my luck, I was really eager to be able reading this! Then, I got the book and I totally did this,

Saya mendapatkan buku ini melalui Goodreads Giveaway.

Berlatarkan Cina yang akan menyelenggarakan Olympiade 2008, petualangan Charlie Evers pun dimulai. Why I read it in the first place?

I was surfing in the internet, hopping from one online book store to another. In one certain store, I saw The Husband by Dean Koontz, the English version, cheap, used but still in good condition. Somehow, I interested to check the information about the book. After some searching, I was kind of curious with it and simply added The Husband in my wishlist (like my wishlist needs to be longer). One day, I was just checking books in Pustaka Alvabet’s website, and found myself surprised. I didn’t know The Husband by Dean Koontz has been translated into Indonesian, and apparently it’s published by Pustaka Alvabet. They publish many great books really, but somehow I don’t see their books in book store as much as other books from different publishers. So, I e-mailed them, asked them to send me this book in exchange for honest review in this blog. And here it is, the said review.

Kenapa saya baca buku ini?

Kebetulan saja saya sedang berselancar di internet, dari satu toko buku daring ke yang lainnya. Ada yang jual The Husband versi Bahasa Inggris dengan harga murah, buku bekas sih memang, tapi saya jadi tertarik mengecek itu buku tentang apa. Setelah tengok sana tengok sini, sepertinya ini buku bagus, jadi saya masukkan ke wishlist saya (yang sudah bejibun itu). Suatu hari, saya sedang mampir ke website Pustaka Alvabet, lihat-lihat bukunya, dan kaget. Ternyata The Husband-nya Dean Koontz sudah diterbitkan oleh mereka. Buku-buku terbitan penerbit ini bagus-bagus, tapi entah kenapa kok seperti jarang ditemui di toko buku yah? Jadi, saya coba minta mereka mengirimkan buku ini ke saya, sebagai ganti ulasan buku di blog saya. Jadi, inilah ini, ulasannya. Hehe.

Why I read it in the first place?

I simply read this book because it’s the work of Robert Ludlum (and Philip Shelby, his co-author for this book). And I really feel ridiculous because I read it just now when this book had actually been there in the shelf since I was in junior high school, and that’s a long time ago. It belongs to my Papa actually, but let’s considers it mine. It’s mine. My first encounter with Ludlum’s books is when I was in senior high school, I read The Jason Bourne series that are TOTALLY SUPER AWESOME! For a long time, I thought The Cassandra Compact is by Tom Clancy. Because my Papa accidentally put this book in between two books of Clancy, that I haven’t read either. I know Tom Clancy just passed away recently, and there’s this uproar because everybody felt the same feeling, they lost a very great thriller master. Unfortunately I haven’t read any Clancy’s book, perhaps next month.... Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, I read this book just because I finally acknowledged this as the work of Robert Ludlum (and Philip Shelby). I need to hunt other Robert Ludlum’s soon.

Kenapa saya baca buku ini?

Saya baca buku ini karena ini karya Robert Ludlum (dan Philip Shelby, rekan penulisnya untuk buku ini). Dan saya merasa konyol sekali karena baru sekarang saya baca ini buku. Pasalnya, buku ini sudah sejak saya SMP ada di rumah. Sebenarnya sih ini bukunya Papa, hehe. Tapi sekarang anggap saja ini sudah berpindah hak milik. Ini buku saya. Pertama kali saya membaca karya Ludlum adalah waktu saya SMA melalui seri Jason Bourne  yang SUPER KEREN SEKALI! Selama ini saya pikir The Cassandra Compact itu tulisannya Tom Clancy, karena waktu disimpan, kebetulan buku ini diapit oleh dua buku Tom Clancy milik Papa juga, yang belum juga sempat saya baca. Tom Clancy... iya tahu dia baru-baru ini meninggal dan semua orang pada gempar karena kehilangan penulis thriller legendaris. Sayangnya saya belum pernah baca bukunya Clancy, bulan depan mungkin. Balik ke topik! Intinya, saya baca buku The Cassandra Compact karena ini karya Robert Ludlum (dan Philip Shelby). Dan saya harus segera berburu karya Ludlum yang lain...

Is it just me or this book really has the I'm-so-legit wave?

Why I read it in the first place?

Bhahahahhahahaha. It’s a silly question, really. So let’s not dwell too much on this. I read this book because I am obssesed on every piece of Dan Brown’s works. People who enjoy reading, who appreciate art, who adore clever and generous character, and who have curiosity toward science and religion, MUST at the very least puke rainbow on Dan Brown’s books, and this book is no exception. How so? Well, this book successfully made me reach my orgasm point, just like a total nerd when it comes to an awesome book with too much awesomeness to bare. In some point I thought my brain is exploded for consumed over dose of amazingness in this book. So, why read this book? Pfft. That’s not even a relevant question if we’re talking about Inferno here.

Terasa enggak sih aura 'keren' dari buku ini? Hahaha.

Kenapa saya baca buku ini?

Bahahahahhaahahha. Sebenarnya ini pertanyaan konyol. Jadi mari tidak berlama-lama di bagian ini. Saya baca buku ini karena saya memang terobsesi dengan semua karya Dan Brown sejak awal. Penikmat kegiatan baca, pengapresiasi seni, penggemar tokoh cerita cerdas baik hati, dan orang yang penasaran akan ilmu pengetahuan dan ilmu agama, PASTI sedikitnya memuntahkan pelangi atas karya-karya Dan Brown, termasuk karya teranyarnya yang satu ini. Bagaimana tidak? Inilah buku yang bisa membuat saya mencapai orgasme, persis seperti anak culun garis keras ketika dihadapkan dengan buku yang terlalu menakjubkan. Rasanya otak meledak saking kagumnya. Jadi, kenapa baca buku ini? Pfft. Itu bahkan bukan pertanyaan relevan kalau Inferno yang kita bicarakan.

Why I read it in the first place?

Honestly? Well, some days ago I went to a book store that was having their fourth anniversary celebration by discounting a massive amount of books. Mostly are books that I have no interest in. But then, my eyes caught something familiar, Satin Merah (Red Satin in English, but this book only available in Indonesian for now). The most amazing part was when I checked the price, it’s JUST Rp 10.000 (something like 1 US dollar!), the actual price was Rp 37.000. I have been eyeing Satin Merah since last year, it was in my will-buy-when-I-have-extra-money-but-I-know-it-won’t-happen list. There’s one thing that made me very curious with this book at first. On the back cover, it tells a glimpse of the story and I thought it was cool. Then there’s this endorsement from fellow Indonesian novelist, Feby Indirani, says, “A theme that’s mostly untouched by writers nowadays.” I never read Feby’s works so I didn’t know how I should feel about her comment. But heck, I already felt very challenged and I couldn’t care less who says what. I thought, “Oh, really?”

Sampul novel Satin Merah yang sesuai dengan mood cerita.

Kenapa saya baca buku ini?

Jujur? Beberapa hari yang lalu saya ke toko buku yang lagi merayakan hari jadinya ke-4 dan mereka buat diskon besar untuk banyak banget buku. Kebanyakan buku yang enggak menarik minat saya. Kemudian tertangkap mata saya, Satin Merah. Yang paling wow-nya waktu lihat harganya Rp 10.000 SAJA (tanpa bermaksud sok kaya). Harga aslinya Rp 37.000. Satin Merah sudah sejak tahun lalu ada di daftar saya, daftar ingin-beli-tapi-pas-duit-lebih-saja. Dari awal tertarik untuk punya dan baca setelah lihat ulasan di sampul belakangnya. Tapi, hanya satu kalimat yang benar-benar bikin saya penasaran sekali, yaitu “Tema yang nyaris tak tersentuh oleh penulis zaman sekarang.” Itu ulasan pendukung untuk Satin Merah dari sesama novelis Indonesia, Feby Indirani. Saya belum pernah baca novel Feby, jadi enggak tahu apakah pendapatnya bisa jadi pegangan, tapi siapapun yang bilang enggak jadi masalah buat saya. Saya sudah terlanjur tertantang, “Ah, masa sebegitunya?”
